“Sew 17th century Challenge” – Photoshoot

For the photoshoot I got some help from my friend, modelling my new 17th century outfit.

She wore the 17th century bodice, skirt, coif and fur over my quilted petticoat, accessoriced with a string of pearls and a Violine.
Here are the result:

  1. It’s a lovely reproduction. I’ve always thought that particular colour combination with the red on top is rather odd, I often wonder how much the fashion choices of the past were determined less by personal taste and more by availability of materials

    1. Thank you!
Yeah it does look ratter odd, now that I think about it.
I think the availability of matherials had a lot to do about what’s worn, but only amongst the common people – the wealthy could wear whatever they liked (to the extent of the sumptuary laws, of course) 🙂

      1. I think it applied amongst the wealthy too. Esp for younger, slimmer family members who would get fabrics recycled from other clothes. I can’t remember which collection it was in, but there’s a satin doublet somewhere that’s been picked apart and laundered ready to be restyled

  2. Congratulations, wonderfull dress!
A pity you are holding the instrument wrong way on the photo (one can forgive ofcourse you dont have the right instrument, as only the Head and a small part can bee seen on the painting)
The girl on the painting definitely plays discant or alto viola da gamba or maybe among youg ladies of the time so popular pardessus de viol – all of those the same family of instruments. Extremely popular in that time (comparable to todays guitar or ukulele).
The bow of this intrument is hold from under, not as you do for modern cello or violin or alto. More as you do on double bass.
Type (discant) viola da gamba in you tube to see (and hear) someone playing.
